Preet Kaur Gill MP, Labour's Shadow Cabinet Minister for International Development, responding to new figures published today that show Home Office Official Development Assistance (ODA) spending increased by 74.3% between 2020 and 2021 to £1.04 billion, said:
"Rather than solving the spiralling costs at the Home Office, the Foreign Secretary has simply bailed out the Home Secretary with a blank cheque from Britain’s aid budget. "Labour will ensure that taxpayers' money is treated with the respect it deserves, solve the Home Office meltdown with our comprehensive plan to tackle channel crossings, break up the criminal gangs, and put in place a new model for development with the independence needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century and tackle the root causes forcing people to flee their homes in the first place."
