Thanks to Government funding three more schools in Birmingham Edgbaston will open free breakfast clubs from September, saving local families up to £450 a year and helping children start the school day ready to learn.

City Road Primary School and George Dixon Primary School in North Edgbaston, and Welsh House Farm Community School in Harborne, have secured Government funding to launch the clubs.

They will join eight schools locally already running breakfast clubs, giving more children access to a healthy breakfast and supporting parents with the morning routine.

Preet Kaur Gill, MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, said:

“I’m delighted that three more schools in Birmingham Edgbaston will benefit from free breakfast clubs from September.

“This is personal to me. I went to City Road Primary School, and before becoming an MP I worked as a children’s services manager in this city. I know how important it is that children arrive at school fed, settled and ready to learn.

“These clubs will save families up to £450 a year, ease pressure on parents, and give children the best possible start to the day.

“Alongside action to bring down the cost of school uniforms and expand support for families, this Government is cutting the cost of getting children into school and investing in children’s futures.”

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said:

“No parent should have to choose between a summer day out to the beach and kitting their child out for school.

“From September, families will feel the difference at the school gates: free breakfast clubs at 1,400 more schools, an end to expensive lists of branded uniform, and more free lunches for those who need them.

“That’s the British childhood this Government believes in and why we’ll always fight to give every child the very best start in life.”

The expansion is part of the Government’s Best Start programme, which has already delivered over 10 million free breakfasts nationally and unlocked five million hours of childcare.

From September, all schools must also comply with new legal limits on the number of branded uniform items they can require, helping parents buy more everyday basics from shops and supermarkets rather than expensive specialist suppliers.
