As the Government announces the development of the first-ever guidance on screen use for under-fives, Preet Kaur Gill MP is calling on parents in Edgbaston to share their views on how to navigate the use of screens with their youngest children.

The guidance, due to be published in April, will be produced by the Children’s Commissioner and provide parents with practical, non-judgemental support on balancing screens with play, speaking and reading.

New government research has found that screen use is near-universal in early childhood, with 98% of two-year-olds watching screens daily. The research also found that children with the highest screen use could say significantly fewer words than those with the lowest screen use.

Engagement sessions with parents, children, early years practitioners and stakeholders will take place across England, allowing participants to share what works in real family life and what support they need from the guidance.

Preet Kaur Gill MP said: “As a former Children’s Manager, I know how challenging it can be for parents to find the right balance with screen time, especially when it feels like screens are everywhere these days. I know this guidance will be hugely welcome and provide that much-needed clarity on what the evidence says.

I’m looking forward to working with the Government and local parents where I can, to shape this guidance and make it work for families.”

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “Screens are part of family life now. The question parents are asking isn’t whether to use them, but how to use them well.

“We know from the evidence and from what parents and teachers are telling us that too much passive screen time can start to crowd out the talking, play and reading that are so important for children’s language and development in the early years.

“That’s why this guidance will be shaped by parents, and sit alongside Best Start Family Hubs rolling out in every local area – helping ensure our youngest children get the best start in life and can seize the opportunities ahead.
