Following serious concerns being raised with Preet about the recently announced financial settlement for the Canal & River Trust, Preet sought assurances from the government's DEFRA Secretary that the settlement will not result in the decline and closure of rivers, canals, and waterways in Birmingham.
Birmingham is home to around 35 miles of canals – which the Canal and River Trust describe as ‘one of the most intricate canal networks in the world.’ These represent Birmingham’s history, are well-loved by residents across the city and by my constituents and are a vital part of our city.
These canals and rivers provide vital access to nature and are increasingly being used by leisure boats, boaters, anglers, and those engaging in sports like paddle sports.
Therefore, Preet was clear: we cannot underestimate the importance of our canals and rivers to our constituents.
See Preet's letter below, and the response she received.
If you have questions or concerns the environment then please write to Preet on preet.gill.mp@parliament.uk or telephone 0121 392 8426.
