Preet Kaur Gill backs £12m plan to revive local journalism and tackle ‘news deserts’

Preet Kaur Gill MP has welcomed a long-awaited Government strategy aimed at reversing the decline of local journalism, warning that the loss of trusted local news risks weakening democracy and disconnecting communities.

The new Local Media Strategy the first of its kind in a generation sets out plans to support struggling local outlets, boost community radio, and address the growing number of areas left without dedicated news coverage.

At its centre is a £12 million Local News Fund, designed to help publishers adapt to the digital age. Local newspapers, online platforms, radio and TV outlets will be able to apply for funding to invest in new technology, reach wider audiences, and build more sustainable business models.

The move comes amid mounting concern about the collapse of local news provision. An estimated 37 local authority areas now have no dedicated local outlet, leaving up to 4.4 million people living in so-called “news deserts” often in some of the most deprived parts of the country.

Preet Kaur Gill, MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, said the strategy recognises the vital role local journalism plays in holding power to account and keeping communities informed.

“Local journalism is a cornerstone of our democracy. When it disappears, communities lose a trusted voice and a vital means of holding decision-makers to account.

This strategy is a welcome step towards supporting local media to adapt, survive and thrive in a rapidly changing landscape.”

Alongside the Local News Fund, the strategy includes targeted support to restore coverage in underserved areas whether by helping existing publishers expand, reviving dormant titles, or backing new community-owned outlets.

Community radio stations will also see increased support, with funding set to double to £1 million a year over the next three years recognising their role in reaching audiences often overlooked by mainstream media.

The strategy also looks to the future of the industry, with new initiatives aimed at encouraging young people into journalism and improving access to trusted news in schools.

For Preet Kaur Gill, the challenge is not simply economic but democratic.

“Trusted local news brings people together, shines a light on local issues, and ensures no community is left behind. This is about strengthening both our media and our democracy.”
