Preet Gill MP welcomes tough new crackdown on fly-tipping and waste criminals

Birmingham Edgbaston MP Preet Kaur Gill has welcomed tough new Government measures to crack down on rogue waste operators and fly-tipping, following years of concerns raised by residents across the constituency.

Residents in Harborne, Quinton, Bartley Green, North Edgbaston, and Edgbaston regularly contact Preet about illegal dumping, overflowing waste, and fly-tipping that blights neighbourhoods, damages the environment and leaves local taxpayers footing the clean-up bill.

The Government has now announced the toughest overhaul of waste carrier licensing in a generation, introducing stricter background checks, stronger enforcement powers and tougher penalties for waste criminals.

Under the reforms, rogue operators who illegally dump waste or deliberately

misdescribe waste could face prison sentences of up to five years.

Waste carriers will also face more rigorous checks before being allowed to operate, including identity verification, criminal record checks and assessments of their competence.

The measures form part of the Government’s Waste Crime Action Plan, backed by increased investment in enforcement to drive organised criminal gangs out of the sector.

Preet Gill MP said:

“Residents across Birmingham Edgbaston are rightly fed up with fly-tipping and illegal dumping.

“Whether it’s in Harborne, Quinton, Bartley Green, Woodgate or Edgbaston, I regularly hear from residents frustrated by rubbish being dumped in their communities and by rogue operators who think they can get away with it.

“I’ve repeatedly raised concerns about fly-tipping on behalf of residents and called for tougher action against those responsible. Illegal dumping blights neighbourhoods, harms the environment and leaves local taxpayers paying the price.

“That is why I welcome this Government’s crackdown. These reforms send a clear message: if you profit from illegally dumping waste, you will face serious consequences.”

Waste Minister Mary Creagh said:

“Waste criminals have abused the system for too long, blighting our communities and environment.

“Through our Waste Crime Action Plan, we’re introducing rigorous background checks, shutting down rogue operators and ensuring those who break the law face tough consequences. These reforms will help protect communities and drive criminal operators out of the sector for good.”

Alongside tougher licensing requirements, the Government has also introduced stronger measures through the Crime and Policing Bill, meaning drivers involved in fly-tipping could receive penalty points on their licence in addition to existing sanctions.

Preet added:

“Most people dispose of their waste responsibly. It is a small number of criminals who cause huge problems for communities.

“Residents want cleaner streets, tougher enforcement and action against those who blight our neighbourhoods. These reforms will help deliver exactly that.

“This is about protecting our environment, supporting law-abiding businesses and ensuring communities across Birmingham Edgbaston can take pride in where they live.”
