I campaigned to bring Birmingham’s first Banking Hub to Harborne so residents could continue to access essential banking services locally, rather than having to travel into the city centre. Thank you to everyone who came to the Sir Richard’s Drive residents’ meeting last night. It was fantastic to see more than 130 residents come together to discuss how we can protect this valued green space. Following constructive discussions with Calthorpe Estates, there is now an opportunity for the community to purchase the land before it goes onto the open market. The meeting was an important step in bringing residents together to discuss how that could be achieved. I will continue working with residents, Calthorpe Estates and others to support a community-led solution. I will be writing to everyone with the next steps and will keep residents updated as progress is made.

Before Parliament rose for the Summer Recess, I had the privilege of responding for the Government in the final debate of the parliamentary term. The Adjournment Debate, secured by David Davis MP, focused on the Thirlwall Inquiry. As Minister for Health Innovation and Safety, I set out the Government’s commitment to ensuring the Inquiry leads to meaningful action, so that lessons are implemented and patient care continues to improve.

Residents contacted me after learning that Calthorpe Estates is proposing to sell the green space between Sir Richard’s Drive and Fugelmere Close. I immediately contacted the Chief Executive of Calthorpe Estates to press for the local community to be given the first opportunity to purchase the land before it is offered on the open market. Calthorpe Estates has confirmed it will give residents that opportunity. I’m holding a residents’ meeting to discuss what happens next, including the option of a community purchase, and how we can work together to protect this valued local green space.

It was wonderful to welcome local residents to Newman University for our Pride in Place event. I have secured £20 million in Government funding for Pride in Place in Woodgate and Bartley Green – led by you, for you. We heard some fantastic ideas about how the funding could be used, and how we can improve our community. As Minister for Health Innovation and Safety, I gave evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee on how we can harness innovation to transform the NHS. My message was clear: innovation must improve outcomes for patients, support our workforce and help build an NHS that prevents illness earlier, delivers better care and is fit for the future.

As Minister for Patient Safety, I know that when things go wrong, patients and families need to know their voices have been heard and that lessons lead to real change. This Government is focused on turning investigations into action, strengthening learning across the NHS, and improving patient safety. I responded to Monday’s adjournment debate on HSSIB 👆🏽
